Kidney stones: Prevention tips

Drink plenty of fluids to keep urine diluted enough to hold all dissolved salts in solution and keep them from forming stones. Staying physically active may help move a stone through your system. Bringing the stone in for analysis may help determine the best treatment for you.

Stones that are too large to pas or are causing bleeding, kidney damage, or ongoing urinary tract infection may require surgical procedure.

Blood and urine test can help detect chemical imbalances favorable to stone formation. If you tend to form calcium stones combined with oxalate, salt intake may be restricted along with certain foods, notably meat (especially organ meats), chicken, fish, asparagus, berries, chocolate, rhubarb, and cooked spinach.
