Depression - Common causes,Prevention and Treatment
It may be triggered by one or combination of the following:
- Severe upheaval, prolonged stress (e.g., death of loved one, bankruptcy, chronic illness).
- Certain physical illnesses (e.g. psoriasis, shingles, stroke, viral infections).
- Hormonal imbalance (e.g. during woman’s premenstrual, postnatal, and menopausal period).
- Certain medicines (e.g. sleeping medicines, oral contraceptives).
- Weak, unstable, or absent relationship (e.g. poor parent-child relationship).
- Biochemical imbalance in the brain.
Prevention and Treatment:
- Take a break, go on vacation.
- Exercise regularly. Aerobic exercise causes the body to release mood-lifting chemicals.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Learn to relax. Watch comedies, read jokes and funny stories.
- If you suspect depression in someone close to you, try to help in out of it by listening to his problem and offering advice. Take all hints at suicide seriously.
- Consult a psychiatrist if, after trying self care, you still lift yourself up from depression.
- The doctor refer you to have psychotherapy.
