Delivery or giving birth : The Moment of Truth

Once dilation is complete and you are in transitional labor, you will be transferred to the delivery room. On hand will be the obstetrical team, your doctor included. An anesthesiologist will likewise be on hand unless you have chosen to deliver ‘naturally’. During natural deliveries your ‘labor coach’ (usually your husband) will also be present.

Usually you will be asked to lie on your back during delivery with your legs elevated and covered with white ’stockings’. A sheet will be draped over you leaving only your face, hands and the birth area exposed. You may also deliver in a semi-sitting position. As soon as it is appropriate, you will be told to push in time with your contractions. Your doctor will apply gentle but firm pressure along your abdomen.

Normally, baby will appear head first, then one shoulder, and the other. As soon as the head is free, the body usually slips out easily. Your baby will receive a name bracelet. The umbilical cord will be examined for the appropriate number of blood vessels, double-clamped and cut, the eyes will be washed to prevent infection, and the nose will be aspirated and cleared of mucus.
