Pregnancy - After the delivery - Life back to normal

The uterus begins to return to its original state right after delivery. Termed involution, this process is usually accompanied by a heavy discharge of blood mixed with other substances which were present in pregnancy. This flow, called ‘lochia’, is normally deep red which will turn to brown then yellow fading to white. Lochia usually stops after 2 weeks but it could last a month. Inform your doctor if it exceeds a month, has a bad odor and resumes after it has stopped.

Menstrual-like cramps may accompany involution but should not be extremely painful. If you have had an episiotomy, you may find sitting normally to be almost impossible. Episiotomies are seldom painful, just slightly uncomfortable and you may want to sit on a soft cushion or pillow. Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers. You might also be prescribed laxatives to help soften your stools and prevent straining during bowel movements especially while an episiotomy is healing.
