Safe exercise for new moms
One question on many new moms’ mind is: How soon should I start exercising? It’s important to start moving. Gentle movement will help your postpartum body heal. In the first few days, stretch lightly to get your body ready for more dynamic movements. Kegel exercises (squeezing and releasing of your pelvic floor muscles) can also speed the healing of any tears. Next, go for short 10-to 15-minute walks to gradually build endurance.
But check with your doctor before adding weight training. You can bleed for up to four to six weeks after delivery, because of the scab formed after the placenta is delivered. Most ob/gyns recommend no strenuous exercise or lifting before bleeding has stopped, as it may cause too much intra-abdominal pressure. If you start bleeding after a workout it’s a sign you’ve done too much too soon and you should take a step back.
