Tips for sleeping better

- Go to bed and get up at the same time.
- Make your bedroom dark. Draw the blinds and turn off night lights. Light at the wrong time upsets your internal clock.
- Avoid coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages for at least four hours before bedtime.
- Skip the booze. Alcohol relaxes some people and makes them drowsy, but it disturbs the sleep cycle.
- Don’t go to bed hungry. You don’t want to eat a full meal within four hours of going to bed because this can cause indigestion or heartburn. But a high carb snack before lights out can help you sleep by promoting the release of serotonin, a brain chemical that increases the sense of calm.
- Get exercise during the day. Just don’t work out less than two hours before bedtime. It will rev you up and make it hard for you to get your zzzs.
