Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, commonly termed as GERD, is a very common problem nowadays and affects about 25 percent of adults. GERD is a result of high acidity of the stomach juice and it refluxes or irritates the area of connection between the stomach and esophagus.

Complaints range from pain in the epigastric region (region of the stomach just below the ribs), heartburn, chest tightness, sour taste in the throat, belching, swallowing difficulty because of a choking sensation in the throat or chest area, or unexplained howarseness or coughing.
GERD is treatable, but the problem is it recurs, especially if irritating substance are taken in. It is best that you avoid spicy, hot, acidic or sour-tasting fruits and foods. Alcohol, caffeine-containing drinks, and smoking are common culprits too. Many drugs can irritate your stomach as well. Avoid missing your meals.
