What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer happens when the cells of the breast grow uncontrollably, invading nearby tissues and spreading throughout the body. These cells multiply and “take on all life of their own,” competing with and depriving normal tissue of nutrients. If left unchecked, these cells become bullies, taking over hapless normal breast tissue. This process, however, can take months and even years. Mammograms (x-ray images of the breasts) can sometimes detect disease before it can be felt or seen.
