How to perform self-examination for breast cancer

If you have regular monthly periods, examine your breasts a few days or a week after your period ends. If you are in menopause, choose the first day of each month. If you are on OCPs, do the exam on the day you begin a new pack of pills.

Check your breasts in the shower or bath in the morning. A lump is easier to detect if your hands and breasts are wet. Use the pads of the three middle fingers (not the tips) and move up and down or in circles. Feel the entire breast and armpits and check nipples for discharge.

Then check your breasts while standing or sitting in front of a mirror. Look for changes in size and shape, and dimpling or nipple abnormality. Next, examine your breasts with your fingers while lying down. Place a small pillow or towel under the shoulder of the side you will examine. Use your right hand to check your left breast and vice versa. This should take 15 to 20 minutes. If you have any doubts about your technique, ask your doctor for help.
