Get screened for breast cancer
Learn how to perform breast self-examinations, get regular physical examinations from your physician and regular screening mammograms appropriate for your age and history. It is suggested that:
- Between age 20 and 39, perform breast self-examination once a month, about 1 week after the monthly period ends.
- Between 20 and 39, get clinical breast examination from a physician every 3 years or every year when you get a Pap smear.
- At age 40 and above, get a clinical breast examination and screening mammogram annually, or at the advice of your physician. Women with a strong family history may need to start mammograms earlier, probably at age 35.
