Researchers asked 80 women with premenopausal symptoms to take isoflavone supplements (containing 9.9 mg of genistein, 18.6 mg of daidzein and 11.4 mg of glycetein) or placebos for four months. Using the Kupperman Menopause Index to tract symptoms, the researchers found that all major symptoms improved, some significantly. An earlier study using soy protein (containing 76 mg of isoflavones daily) reduced hot flashes by 45% after 12 weeks. A separate study found that isoflavone-rich soy protein also helped reduce bone loss in middle-aged women.
